About Ilona

Ilona Bruckard is an Australian artist, based in Western Sydney with a passion for creating and teaching. She specialises in ceramic sculpture but also works in a variety of other mediums. Ilona has an Advanced Diploma in Visual Arts, and is a Visual Art teacher at Tafe NSW. Her recent achievements include being part of the community art project organised by Penrith City Council, a 2022 Finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, South Australia Museum, Adelaide, and being included in The Journal of Australian Ceramics in 2019 and 2021.

Ilona’s artistic inspiration comes from the exploration of the inner energy that link a sense of spirit to place. Her current practice has evolved from creative play into sculptural works that represent a sense of energy and spirit, expressing a connection to place, belonging and the notion of ‘home’.

The organic elements of the works bring layers of meaning. The petals represent life, growth and rebirth from even the most desolate of environments. At times they represent layers of the earth, the movement of the ocean, or of simple life forms growing and making a place for themselves. And at other times the work speaks of metaphysical aspects of human experience – representing inner growth, and the struggles of the spirit and soul.
