About Clare

Clare completed a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in Printmaking at the University of Cape Town, she came to ceramics after moving to London in 1996. In 2001 she emigrated to Australia and continued studying ceramics at TAFE and completed a Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics.

Her current body of work is the result of clay, stitching and printmaking coming together in an organic and unpremeditated way to express her story. The functional nature of her work ties it to the domestic realm where both stitching and ceramics are often found to be in us. Her desire to tell her personal stories and connect with others through shared memories is a powerful driver in the making of her work.

Workshop structure

In this two day workshop Clare will take you through her handbuilding method of decorating clay slabs in a variety of ways (including embossing using a hand stitched design and mono printing ) and then using these slabs to make functional objects - such as a cup and a spoon.

Day 1 is spent on creating the patterns and textures which will be used on the second day. This includes some drawing and design work, creating a hand stitched panel and making an embossing template from clay, then painting patterns with underglaze on newsprint for use in the mono print element.

Day 2 is spent on preparing slabs for hand building - including mono printing and embossing the slab - and then building a cup (if time is available a spoon can also be made) using the prepared slabs.
